Celebrating a community effort at Pohlen

After events such as the 2009 charity golf tournament, the Whitegoat charity event, the Ladies Lunch featuring Annabelle White and the community raffle, it was with a great deal of pleasure that Chair of the Pohlen Hospital Board, Robin Steed, welcomed invited guests to Pohlen to celebrate both the commission of additional beds and the official opening of the outdoor exercise and rehabilitation equipment area.

"It is the vision by former Hospital Board Chair and current Pohlen Foundation Chair, Lady Margaret Spring, that capital purchases and facility development here at Pohlen continue to provide quality care in an increasing number of service areas supported by the community" said Mrs Steed. "As you will be aware the health sector is being challenged to increase productivity and achieve efficiencies. Pohlen accepts that challenge and we do so in full understand that beside us, stands the Pohlen Foundation and the untiring work of its trustees."

In reply and on behalf of the Pohlen Foundation trustees, Lady Margaret offered her thanks to the community who has assisted with fundraising, the philanthropic organizations that have supported various projects and acknowledged the special effort of a number of people traveling from Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga and Hamilton to join in project completion celebrations.

The first of the two projects was the conversion of the underutilized operating theatre into a four bed short stay observation ward. "Four extra beds multiplied by 30 days per month equates to another 120 bed days per month" said Lady Margaret. "This means many more patients can be cared for in their home town, and that their families can be near at hand." The previous anesthetic preparation and scrub rooms have also been converted into an endoscopy/minor day surgery area with dedicated cleaning facilities attached.

Secondly and tailor-made to suit our community needs, the outdoor exercise and rehabilitation facility was officially opened with the aim of increasing the mobility of those in our community who are rehabilitating or have a disability. The facility is also designed to provide encouragement to increase strength, coordination and balance of adults, especially our senior citizens. The exercise equipment is situated between the hospital and maternity entrances and is free and available for use by any adult in our community during daylight hours seven days per week. A coordinator has been employed and will be onsite regularly to educate potential users as to how to use the equipment safely and effectively, and monitor results of those using the equipment, especially those making use of rehabilitation equipment. Matamata Medical Centre doctors and physiotherapists have been supportive of this gentle exercise project.

"We are very pleased with the results" said Lady Margaret. "The two projects have both certainly been community projects with many organizations, businesses and individuals assisting and I thank everyone involved. I speak on behalf of all the trustees when I say it is with pride and pleasure that I now officially hand both projects over to Pohlen Hospital." After enthusiastic applause, visitors and invited guests were then given a tour of the new facilities and an opportunity to mix, mingle and enjoy the afternoon.
